Summertime is fly time

Sommerzeit ist Fliegenzeit

The air is full of buzzing insects and plagues the horses. Insects are real pests for horses, whether in the pasture, in the stable or when riding. To get rid of annoying insects, horses can shake themselves, move jerkily or even suddenly gallop. But insects are not just small pests, they can also transmit diseases such as piroplasmosis or sweet itch and damage the horse's skin.

Horses may be quite large animals, but even for them a mosquito bite or horsefly bite is not a pleasant experience. Horses have very sensitive skin, more sensitive than humans, and can feel the lightest touch and minimal pressure. Even the smallest fly is annoying and mosquito bites itch just as badly, while horsefly bites can be really painful.

Why do horses attract flies, mosquitoes and other insects?

Horses regulate their body temperature by secreting sweat. However, it is precisely this salty sweat that attracts insects. Horses use their mane and tail to try to defend themselves against insects in a natural way. However, this is often not enough, especially in summer or in warm temperatures.

More tips that can help against the insect plague

  • Always keep the stable and pasture clean (do not provide breeding grounds for the "pests")
  • Sultry days are a feast for flying pests, especially mosquitoes. Therefore, when temperatures are high and humidity is high, it is better to leave the horse in the stable
  • The best way to get rid of horse sweat, which attracts insects, is to spray it with cold water as regularly as possible on hot days. Be careful: some horses are afraid of water and therefore need to be introduced to the refreshing shower carefully
  • If the insect plague cannot be dealt with during the day, you can alternatively put your horse out at night
