What is a stomach ulcer? Why GNF? When should I feed GNF?
What is a stomach ulcer?
The horse's stomach has a limited capacity of around 15 litres. It consists of a glandless part and an area with glands that is protected from acid by a layer of mucus. When the horse eats grass in the pasture, it must continuously produce acid for digestion.
If for any reason the horse's stomach is not full for a long period of time, the natural acid produced to digest the feed causes stomach ulcers because it attacks the protective lining of the stomach and changes the pH level.
Effective treatment strategies for gastric ulcers aim to increase the pH in the stomach by inhibiting or buffering gastric acid, thereby creating an environment that allows ulcers to heal, as well as optimized housing and feeding measures.
Stomach ulcers are a major problem for horses and have been increasingly recognized in recent years as a cause of poor performance in competition horses. Stomach ulcers are common in both racehorses and other horses.
Why supplementary feeding?
The reasons for the frequent occurrence of stomach ulcers are rations with a high proportion of concentrated feed/little roughage, stable rest and training stress. However, taking horses with stomach ulcers out of training and putting them out to pasture is not very practical. Careful nutrition is an important prerequisite for valuable competition horses to be able to maintain a healthy digestive system even under demanding conditions.
There is general agreement that gastric ulcers are more common and more severe in horses undergoing intensive training. Gastric ulcers are a serious health problem in foals (especially in the first months of life), yearlings and high-performance horses.
TRM has developed a unique daily feed supplement for horses to maintain optimal intestinal health and function and enable maximum feed utilization.
GNF Paste cares for the intestines by regulating the pH value and reducing the effects of stress and feed changes. Due to the presence of slippery elm, the paste significantly improves the thickness and quality of the mucus layer in the stomach and thus represents a significant development in the product range.
Just as the principle "NO HOOF, NO HORSE" applies, a healthy intestine is the prerequisite for a healthy horse.
Here you will find a checklist. Do one or more of the statements apply? Then you should support your horse!
- Is your horse having trouble gaining weight or losing weight quickly?
- Has your horse suddenly started cribbing or grinding its teeth?
- Does your horse have a dull coat/poor appetite?
- Does your horse suffer from digestive problems during transport, at competitions or when weaning?
- Does your horse quickly become stressed in certain situations?
- Has the vet diagnosed your horse with stomach ulcers?*
*If the veterinarian has diagnosed your horse with a stomach ulcer: Veterinarians usually prescribe drug treatment (inhibition of acid secretion); after treatment, feed GNF paste and then GNF pellets.
GNF - Gut Nutrition Formula. GNF enables optimal gut health and function while maintaining the natural digestive process.
This in turn ensures optimal utilization of the daily feed ration.
