Yes - we'll swap that one too! Why not use a homemade hay steamer? The homemade one, consisting of a rain barrel, bicycle basket and the good old Kärcher, is certainly the cheaper solution. But what is the real result? The truth is: In order to kill all respirable bacteria, viruses, mites, etc., the hay must reach at least 75°C. This is only possible if the hay is steamed evenly. In most homemade or self-built systems, the steam outlet is under the hay. The steam rises through the simplest gaps, which are usually located at the edge of the container. The hay gets hot there, but lukewarm at best in the middle. This has the same effect as immersing or moistening the hay. The bacteria multiply by 150% within 10 minutes. After just 30 minutes, the bacteria have already multiplied by 15 times, and after an hour by 244 times. Steaming at the wrong temperature has a huge negative impact on the hay and increases the risks to your horse's health. In addition, very few rain barrels/water barrels or garbage cans are made of food-safe plastic, let alone heat-resistant plastic. When the plastic in such containers heats up, toxic fumes can be released or toxins can migrate into the hay - this is not exactly good for your horse's health either. When steaming, the steam in the hay travels through the entire mass of hay until the thermometer in the lid reads around 90°C. This process takes 50-90 minutes (in a NUVEQ®) and heats the hay to over 75°C, killing 98% of all bacteria, dust mites and fungal spores. Yes - some horses stop coughing even when using a homemade model. This is not due to the absence of bacteria, but because all respirable particles stick to the hay due to the moisture and enter the stomach. And depending on your horse's sensitivity, other problems will then arise, e.g. rash, diarrhea, etc. Hay steamed with professional hay steamers (e.g. NUVEQ® horse hay steamers) often appears drier after steaming than hay made with homemade equipment. This is because the water/steam evaporates immediately due to the enormous heat. The respirable particles are boiled off and no longer stimulate allergens or enter the horse's stomach. In summary, yes, it is possible to steam hay in a homemade hay steamer, but BE CAREFUL because you can cause more health problems than you help and you can put your stables and horses at risk.
